The more I listen to the album the more I find it veering away from pretty much all the territory I have called it out for inhabiting already.

Chrisom Infernium and Mephisto Deleterio are proving themselves to be top-notch black metal musicians, and the scary thing is, they just keep getting better and better.

Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy, while just as heavy, if not heavier, is a much more musical evolved record than the previous one. Meaning, it’s a whirlwind of inspiration that drifts around several emotive sparks outside of just pure savagery.

Having been an act that’s more than worthy of attention for years now, “The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom” sees Veilburner at an undeniable peak.

With VLBRNR, Veilburner shows us that, six albums deep, they can still pull several infernal tricks from up their sleeves.

Veilburner, whose crusade upon the very light and sanity of our world has made them a need-to-know act in their increasingly abnormal corner of black/death metal where even still, after all they’ve done, they continue to raise the bar with each release.

Fine-tuned though [Veilburner's songwriting] may be, I think it’s a little bit above my reading level to try and track the internal order of this material rather than the grotesque, yet enticing, contours that ripple away from it.

Veilburner defies all expectations to the point that I’m tempted to call this a work that’s sure to be considered one of the biggest and most well-executed of its kind that 2021.

The inclusion of ever-darker, ever-more compelling splashes of melody and moody ambience, soaring lead lines and, wouldn’t you know it, some honest-to-god clean vocals (on the Anaal Nathrakh-esque “Panoramic Phantoms”) definitely qualifies this album as their most melodic yet.

There’s not a single dull moment to be had as Veilburner clearly understands the mammoth task of keeping the attention of the listener while still bringing a great level of complexity to the mix that can’t be ignored.

...there’s ever an elusive, transcendent element to the music. You hear it in the dim corners of Mephisto Deleterio’s scabrous solos and feel it in the airy heights of the track’s main riff.

VEILBURNER manages to squeeze in elements of industrial, psychedelia, progressive metal, black metal and dissonant death metal, and for the most part they pull it off well.

A strong series of discordant, jangly patterns that are strongly technical with near-progressive tendencies within the arrangements and maneuver within the utterly off-kilter tempos which give the tracks a highly offbeat appearance that’s quite intriguing.

Its tornadic, ever-shifting time signatures; elliptical, frantic, almost jangly guitaring; limber, jazz-like bottom end; and penchant for curious tangents make for quite a musical shitstorm, but it definitely grabs your attention.

An uncompromisingly bright album, its effervescent synths and heavily effected clean guitars give tracks like first single 'Ever Relapsing Fever' a brilliant, almost garish shade.

Even with the styles brought to the table musically, ‘The Three Lightbearers’ is a fairly instant release, which resounds with powerful displays of light and dark from a broad palette. With that said, I have a feeling that once they purify and hone their style, their best work is yet to come.
